2.1.1 Communication services

The services offered by the platform include:

  •     Instant messaging – onnet
  •      SMS - offnet
  •      Audio calling – offnet and onnet
  •      Video calling – onnet
  •       Audio conferences
  •       Video conferences
  •       Voicemail
  •       Presence

Onnet services are those realized among service users or other service network elements. The offnet communication is to external networks, i.e. the PSTN phone numbers.

Users can use the services directly from the VUC portal, mobile UC clients or from a 3rd party hardware voip adapters (IP phones).

Supported media codecs:

  • Onnet calls:
  • audio: OPUS - preferred, g711u and g711a, g729 (on request)
  • video: VP8
  • Offnet calls:
  • Audio: g729, g711u, g711a

Media path for onnet calls:

The platform uses the ICE protocol for establishing media path between two endpoints. It always tries to find a direct path between to endpoints (peer to peer) with the use of a TURN server. If the direct connection cannot be established it falls back to the path through TURN media relay server.

Encryption

The UC platform supports SIP over TLS as the signaling protocol. It is used for communication between client and the server. For communication with external SIP trunks or termination gateways an unencrypted SIP over TCP or UDP can be used.  Calls outside the system are referred to as offnet calls in the later parts.

As the media protocol for onnet (user to user) calls the SRTP is used which encrypts the media payload. The negotiation of the encryption keys is realized with the use of DTLS.

For offnet calls (outside the platform), the system uses unencrypted RTP.

Note: As the majority of the ATAs in the market at the moment do not support SRTP or SRTP with DTLS the platform allows also for unencrypted onnet calls from or two ATAs using RTP.
